Salt Lake City Eye Doctor Named President of American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery

Dr. Robert Cionni, the Medical Director of The Eye Institute of Utah, takes his post as President of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) in April, 2015.

Salt Lake City, UT – One of the area’s most well-known ophthalmologists and Salt Lake City cataract surgeons has recently been named the President of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), an international educational organization dedicated to the advancement of ophthalmic surgery and quality eye care. Dr. Robert Cionni, a cataract and refractive surgery specialist who also serves as the Medical Director of The Eye Institute of Utah, will assume his role as ASCRS President during the organization’s April, 2015 Symposium and Congress held in San Diego.

Dr. Cionni has been with the ASCRS, a society consisting of 9,000 members, since his first year as a practicing ophthalmologist in 1989. He currently serves as the ASCRS Vice President. Dr. Cionni is a board-certified Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Utah’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He has also served as a reviewer for a variety of ophthalmology journals, including the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Cionni specializes in laser cataract surgery, complex cataract surgery, implantable contact lenses, LASIK laser vision correction, and other refractive surgery procedures. His research has been published in numerous journals and he is a regular speaker at ophthalmic meetings across the globe.

Dr. Cionni will give the incoming President’s address at the commencement of the ASCRS’s meeting in San Diego on April 18th. He says the organization has been vital to the development of his career, and it has helped him learn about new eye care technologies and techniques that have contributed to improved results for his patients.
