The Eye Institute of Utah is proud to announce that we are the first practice in the state (and among the first in the entire nation) to offer our patients an advanced new treatment for presbyopia, a common age-related vision condition which causes near vision to progressively decline and become blurry. The Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is designed to improve near vision for presbyopic patients between the ages of 45 and 65. Our own Dr. Robert J. Cionni recently served as a Principal Investigator on a clinical trial of this technique, and we are pleased to now be able to offer it to a broader range of patients here at The Eye Institute.

The Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay is a surgical implant developed by ReVision Optics, Inc. The inlay is placed in the eye’s cornea to reshape its surface and allow for a better focus of light, which can ultimately lead to improved near and intermediate vision. The Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay is extremely small and is thinner than a human hair. The implant can be placed in a quick, outpatient procedure that should take no more than 10 to 15 minutes to complete. This treatment can be very beneficial for patients who are suffering from blurry near vision due to presbyopia but want to avoid the hassle of bifocals and reading glasses to see near objects more clearly. In a recent clinical trial, 92% of the 373 patients studied had achieved 20/40 or better near vision results, and all study participants had 20/25 or better distance vision in both eyes.
