What causes retinal detachment?

The retina is a thin layer of nerve tissue that lines the inside of the eyeball across the retina. Retinal detachments are usually caused by small holes or tears in the retina. Retinal detachment poses a great threat to your vision and should be treated immediately.

There are three types of retinal detachments:

  1. A break in the sensory layer of the retina. In this case fluid seeps underneath, causing the retina to separate from the underlying pigment layer. Nearsighted people are susceptible to this type.
  2. Strands of vitreous or scar tissue create traction on the retina, pulling it loose . Patients with diabetes are more susceptible to this form of detachment.
  3. Fluid collects underneath the layers of the retina, causing it to separate from the back wall of the eye. This may happen in conjunction with another eye condition that causes swelling or bleeding.
