Eyelid & Facial Plastics
Do you want to look younger?
The Eye Institute of Utah isn’t just for eye enthusiasts – it’s for youthful skin enthusiasts too! After all, there are many things that accelerate the skin’s aging process: overexposure to the sun, environmental factors, physical stress and more. Our experienced eyelid and facial plastics team, led by the distinguished Dr. John D. McCann, can perform many forms of cosmetic surgery to help you and your skin look younger.
Tear Drain Surgery
Excess tearing in adults may be a result of poor tear drainage or by overproduction of tears. Tears, produced in the tear gland, are an important factor in eye health. Tears help moisturize eyes, keeping them free of debris and from becoming irritated. Tearing is fairly common and can often be treated with the use of artificial tears. However, patients that suffer from blockage of the tear drainage system externally, in the eyelid, or in the nose can require surgical correction.
What about Eyelid Rejuvenation?
Eyelid rejuvenation, or upper- and lower-lid blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can create a more youthful appearance. This procedure removes excess skin and fat cells that cause upper eyelids to droop and the area under the eyes to sag. Fine lines and crow’s feet can also be removed. Although eyelid surgery is commonly considered a cosmetic procedure, many patients’ vision can be affected by eyelid problems. Patients who suffer from drooping eyelids can greatly benefit from reconstructive eyelid surgery.
BOTOX & Fillers
Botox is a purified neurotoxin produced by the clostridium bacteria. It weakens muscle action by blocking nerve impulses. Tiny doses are injected under the skin to eliminate wrinkles and expression lines. Areas treated with Botox include the forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet, eyelids, lips, chin and neck bands. Botox is injected with a tiny needle and usually causes little discomfort. The effect lasts an average of 3-6 months depending on the injection site and dosage. Botox is the best and most popular facial cosmetic advance in years. Botox also provides excellent relief for selected migraine and stress related headaches, eyelid and facial asymmetry and palsy as well as hyperhidrosis (excess sweating) of armpits, palms of hands and feet.
Another non-surgical treatment option used to cosmetically improve problem areas on the face today includes fillers such as Elevasse, Juvederm, Radiesse, and Restylane. Fillers are synthetic materials injected into the face to increase lip, cheek or chin volume. Fillers can also be used to reduce the nasolabial fold and to fill in creases in the skin. In some cases, fillers can be used to treate the hollows beneath the eyes.
The orbit, commonly referred to as the eye socket, is made up of multiple bones, muscles, blood vessels and nerves and is an important structure that protects the delicate eye. Unfortunately, a variety of problems can occur in the eye socket that affect the function of the eye. These problems range from inflammatory disease like thryoid eye disease, as seen in patients with Graves’ disease, to tumors, infections, and injuries from trauma. Patients who suffer from orbital problems may experience double vision, pain, swelling and other visual problems that can lead to vision loss or blindness. Although many of these conditions are rare, you can rest assured as Dr. John D. McCann is a world-renowned specialist with experience in orbital surgery and treatment.
