Robert J. Cionni, M.D. is the Medical Director of The Eye Institute of Utah and specializes in cataract and refractive lens implant surgery as well as LASIK and PRK. He is a graduate of St. Xavier High School and University of Cincinnati where he received his degrees in chemistry and medicine. His academic performance merited election into the Phi Beta Kappa honorary society and while in medical school, he received a Fight for Sight Fellowship Award for his work in corneal wound healing. Following a one-year internship in Internal Medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, he traveled to University of Louisville where he served as a Resident in Ophthalmology. After his Residency, he completed a Fellowship in cataract and implant surgery with Robert H. Osher, M.D. at CEI.

Dr. Cionni has established himself on the forefront of advanced cataract and implant techniques by being one of the first surgeons in the Midwest to perform sutureless cataract surgery. He is frequently invited to speak at national and international meetings including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. At these meetings, he instructs Ophthalmologists in advanced cataract surgery techniques and the management of cataract and implant complications. He has authored and co-authored numerous manuscripts, textbook chapters, and video journal segments that are read and viewed worldwide.

Dr. Cionni has developed a particular interest in patients with traumatic cataract, congenital lens subluxation, and disease-induced zonular weakness. He has designed special implants and surgical techniques to improve the surgical outcomes in these challenging eyes. Patients with ocular injuries are referred from all over the world for his opinion and surgical expertise.

Dr. Cionni is a member of the Utah Ophthalmology Society, the Utah Medical Association, Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, the Ohio State Medical Association, the Cincinnati Society of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the International Intraocular Implant Club. He is Board Certified as a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has been selected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America.
