Robert J. Cionni, M.D. is the Medical Director of The Eye Institute of Utah and a world-renowned expert in the field of modern cataract surgery. He performs more than 2,500 surgeries a year, specializing in cataract surgery, lens implants, and refractive surgeries such as LASIK, PRK, implantation of ICLs and refractive lens exchange. He has established himself as a leader in his specialty by pioneering some of the most advanced cataract and implant techniques, authoring numerous articles and textbook chapters about specialized cataract techniques, technologies and management of complications. He is actively involved in clinical research bringing the latest technologies to his patients; sometimes, well before these technologies are available to other surgeons.
Dr. Cionni has designed special implants and surgical techniques to improve the surgical outcomes in patients with traumatic cataract and congenital lens subluxation, as found in many patients with Marfan Syndrome. In addition, he teaches surgeons nationally and internationally about the use of these devices. Patients with these types of problems are referred to him from all over the world.
Dr Cionni has become an authority in refractive cataract surgery, helping patients reduce or eliminate their dependency on glasses after cataract surgery. He lectures across the country concerning the use of intraocular lens (IOL) implants such as multifocal and Toric astigmatism correcting implants. In addition to advanced technology IOLs, Dr. Cionni utilizes the LenSx® Femtosecond Laser and ORA System with VerifEye™ to help offer his patients the best, most accurate outcomes with refractive cataract surgery.
Dr. Cionni received degrees in medicine and chemistry from the University of Cincinnati. His academic performance merited election into the Phi Beta Kappa honorary society and while in medical school, he received a Fight for Sight Fellowship Award for his work in corneal wound healing. Following a one-year internship in Internal Medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, he traveled to University of Louisville where he served as a Resident in Ophthalmology. After his Residency, he completed a Fellowship in cataract and implant surgery with Robert H. Osher, M.D. at the Cincinnati Eye Institute.

Dr. Cionni has established himself on the forefront of advanced cataract and implant techniques by being one of the first surgeons in the Midwest to perform sutureless cataract surgery. He is frequently invited to speak at national and international meetings including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. At these meetings, he instructs Ophthalmologists in advanced cataract surgery techniques and the management of cataract and implant complications. He has authored and co-authored numerous manuscripts, textbook chapters, and video journal segments that are read and viewed worldwide.
Dr. Cionni has developed a particular interest in patients with traumatic cataract, congenital lens subluxation, and disease-induced zonular weakness. He has designed special implants and surgical techniques to improve the surgical outcomes in these challenging eyes. Patients with ocular injuries are referred from all over the world for his opinion and surgical expertise.
Dr. Cionni is a member of the Utah Ophthalmology Society, the Utah Medical Association, Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, the Ohio State Medical Association, the Cincinnati Society of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the International Intraocular Implant Club. He is Board Certified as a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has been selected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America.
