A world-renowned cataract and glaucoma expert, Alan Slade Crandall, MD, joined The Eye Institute of Utah in August of 1997 as a specialist in the medical and surgical management of cataracts and glaucoma. He has been a principal investigator in clinical research projects relating to cataracts and glaucoma, and has performed thousands of refractive surgeries. Thanks in part to his reputation, Dr. Crandall has been invited to lecture on these subjects in countries throughout the world.

History

Dr. Crandall held the position of chief of service at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Philadelphia from 1979–1981. He has served on the editorial board for both the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Ocular Surgery News since 1996.

Recipient of several national awards, Dr. Crandall is a past president of the Utah Ophthalmology Society. He has guest lectured since 1979 and has presented in many countries, including Sweden, Denmark, Egypt, Singapore, Venezuela, Vietnam, Brazil and England. Dr. Crandall has also published more than 100 papers for peer review and more than 10 medical books or chapters.

Dr. Crandall is passionate about his role as a surgeon with the Harvest African Children’s Foundation. For the past nine years, Dr. Crandall has traveled to Africa once a year to teach local doctors and perform free cataract and cataract-related surgeries.
